Parents Get Smarter The Older We Get!

I am sure you have heard the phrase or experienced it yourself, that parents get smarter the older we get. As I have gone through all my health problems I have come to realize that my father, who was a dentist, not only followed but gave us a great example of how to have a very healthy lifestyle and he did it in such a way I never really noticed. Too bad I forgot and didn’t continue what he showed me all my life. As I look at the findings of scientific research on health and what to eat, I realize my dad was a genius. Here are some little health gems that my father followed:

1. We always had juice in the mornings. We called it blue juice but it was none other than the amazing blueberry. That great antioxidant with a myriad of benefits.

2. He always had a bowl full of a variety of nuts in their shells (the most healthy way to eat them by the way). We loved them because it was so fun to use the nut cracker.

3. He was always cutting up whole red apples with their skins on for us to snack on, whether we were watching TV, reading or playing outside. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I just read an article about that very quote and how it really does help us to stay healthy.

4. He did push ups and went for walks everyday of his life until he died.

5. He always made us have a big breakfast without the sugary cereal. We could have it after we ate our regular breakfast of good healthy food, as I am sure you have guessed, we weren’t all that hungry after our regular breakfast as it turned out.

And last but not least, almost every night we played games together. Now how is that healthy? I’ll let you figure that one out.

A Cure for Every Body?

One thing I have learned about health is that every body is different in how it responds to medical treatment, to natural healing, to herbs, to alternative medicines. I once thought that when I discovered some great cure that it would work for everyone. Obviously, that isn’t the case and it is never so apparent as in all the crazy diet schemes that are out on the market. Two people can be on the same diet and one will lose weight and the other won’t. I have found that true for a lot of other things as well, and sometimes it is nothing more than a feeling that a person has that they don’t like what is happening to their body or how the cure is effecting them, whether that is physically, psychologically, mentally or emotionally. So how does one know what to try and what will work. I had a homeopathic healer tell me that we are our own best doctors and if we really listen to our bodies they will tell us what we need. Now she didn’t mean that we would just know what to do and what to use, but rather through a series of trial and error searches and trying different things, if we listened to how our bodies were responding we would know if it was working. I don’t need a doctor to tell me when a drug is having an adverse effect on me and I am becoming allergic to it and I believe we can do the same with all types of treatments.

So how do we go about this search? Well, first of all there are some things we know will help the majority of us. Getting enough sleep! I would put a number of hours on that but I had a friend that could sleep only 4 hours a day and she still had more energy than I did. Again, just listen to your body.

Exercise! We all need to have this be part of our life style, but the type of exercise you choose again should be what works best with your body. I can’t run marathons like my daughter but I can dance the same amount of hours (well I use to be able to) and feel just great.

Eating right! We just have to have the will power to avoid fast foods and the trends of eating that this country has taken. I saw an email on the comparison of how much meals cost between 4 different countries and of course the USA was one of them. The thing that captured my attention wasn’t the difference in cost between the countries which was significant, but the types of foods each countries’ families were consuming. Guess which country had the worst diet with very little fruits and vegetables and whole grains? That’s right the good old US of A.

Enjoying life! We just have far too many stresses, sometimes self imposed, so we need to take time to smell the roses and relax. Stress is killing people and they don’t even know it.

OK, so that is all well and good but what about all these health secrets I am sharing with you or that you read on the internet? Well, if you find yourself trying to find a cure for something that is bothering you, you are already listening to your body so go ahead and try out whatever treatment you have found. It’s the trial and error that works AND listening to your body. I know that the things I talk about will really work for some of you without question. I know they will because they have worked for others, but they might not for everyone. So keep searching and trying. I know you will found something if you don’t give up. We don’t have to accept feeling bad or hurting or having bad health. There are answers out there, you just have to expend a little energy to find them. I know you can do it so keep searching there really is a cure for every body.

Health Secrets!

I have thought many times about writing down all the things I have learned over the years in my quest for good health. Unfortunately, I haven’t followed that prompting like I should have, so I have forgotten many of the things I have learned. So…. I decided that I wasn’t going to let that happen again. Even if the bits of wisdom I am going to start posting on my blog don’t exactly relate to RLS, I still feel they are worth recording for anyone that is interested in a more natural approach to health. My readers might be more receptive than my own family and friends. Family can sometimes be skeptical to one of their own giving them advice. Anyway for the next, however many posts it takes to write all these gems down, I will be writing my collective knowledge of the health secrets I have learned through trial and error over the years. Now this might be fewer blogs than I think because my brain has turned into mush, but I will try to dust out the cobwebs and share as many as I can remember with you.

Drugs In Drinking Water?

I ran across this AP article on the internet that is very unsettling. It stated that;

“A vast array of pharmaceuticals- including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones- have been found in the drinking water supples of at least 41 million Americans..”

Now, I don’t know about you but that is an alarming statistic for me. It further states that scientists are worried about the long-term consequences to human health. No kidding Sherlock! So how is this happening? The article went on to say;

“People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into reservoirs, rivers or lake, Then, some of the water is cleansed again at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers. But most treatments do not remove all drug residue.”

Well it makes sense that it could happen but what does that mean for us? Stop drinking water? Yeah right, but obviously we are going to be adversely affected. I have no idea what the answer is and I don’t think it means going to bottled water because so many of the companies just bottle tap water and sell it at a high price and I don’t think that home water purifiers or any kind of water purifiers for that matter are made to get rid of drugs found in our drinking water. I do think however, it is something we need to be aware of and then maybe we can become better consumers and advocates for change. For me however, this little bit of news tells me a lot. It could explain why we have so many drug resistant strains of bacteria. It could explain why our children develop so early in childhood, why we have so many new health problems. Are we being overdosed without even knowing it. OK, so the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose; but how many of you also on your own take acetaminophen and ibuprofen? They found traces of those. How many of you take drugs for infection, pain, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems? They found those in some areas of the country. Does that increase or decrease the numbers of those problems? I am sure it can be argued by both sides, but since I stand on the side of alternative medicine and it’s approaches to health, I find this down right alarming.

I don’t like fear tactics and this sounds that way so let me add that I don’t think things are that bad now or irreversible but what is the prognostication for the next 20 years if we don’t make changes now?

The Dangers of Hidden Mercury!!

I found another threat of mercury that we women have to watch out for; I wasn’t even aware of until I read it on the Optimal Health University Newsletter that is in my chiropractor’s office. It talked about the dangers of mascara and eye shadow.

“Eye cosmetics – which contain pigments, fragrance, resins and preservatives – are a common cause of eyelid dermatitis. Many also include mercury as a preservative and germ killer. Federal law allows eye products to contain up to 65 parts per million of mercury.”

“A well-known cause of neurological damage, mercury accumulates in the body over time: making even minimal exposure potentially dangerous.”

I have talked about the dangers of mercury that leaches from our fillings and that some research suggests that there could be a link to mercury poison and RLS. Obviously, if it can cause neurological damage it can have an impact on the increase of our symptoms .

If it isn’t one thing it is another and to think of all the years I have used mascara and eye shadow! I just wish the manufacturers would list in plain English what they put in there products and then maybe we could be better informed consumers. Obviously, they don’t want us to be informed because we wouldn’t buy their products.

I have heard of some homeopathic products that supposedly can help remove mercury from our systems. I will see if I can found some names and brands and let you know.

Staying Healthy While Traveling on a Plane and Avoiding Deep Vein Thrombosis

I read this article by Judi Dash on ways to stay healthy on a plane. There was some really good advice on such things as; drinking water or fruit juices every hour and avoiding alcohol or caffiene drinks, bringing your own blanket and pillow because you can never be sure how clean their supplies are, and being careful with blocked ears from colds or high altitudes by chewing gum, sucking on candy or swallowing. However, the item that caught my attention was on blood clots, also known as deep venous thrombosis or DVT which can develop in the deep veins of the legs, especially on long flights. They can lead to a potentially deadly embolism, sometimes days after the trip. Her solutions were exactly things we should do and sometimes have to do with Restless leg syndrome; that is stretch and walk around, do in-seat extension and flexes, avoid sitting with your legs crossed and try to get your legs above your heart, which is impossible unless you are in first class or you have my product the Restful Traveler, that at least gets your legs raised up off the seat cushion so there is no compression on the blood vessels. So, I think it is nice to know that if we do those things that can help with RLS we can also avoid ever having deep vein thrombosis.  I thought it was great to have something positive to say about having restless legs.

Restless legs – Depression – Bio-identical Hormones

Hi Everyone,
I decided to share a personal story with all of you that I believe is all connected in someway.
You have to forgive my prejudices, but I think anti-depressant drugs have created worse side effects than the depression many of us have suffered from in our lifetimes. It is interesting that for some odd reason (that someone might figure out eventually), many of us that suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome also experience depression, anxiety and panic. Yes, I know not sleeping can make one depressed, but did we have some symptoms of depression even before we had RLS? Did RLS create the depression or did the chemical imbalance of depression create RLS? I don’t truly know the answer to that, but it would be an interesting study.
I had quite severe depression in college many years ago, and had no idea, that that was what I was experiencing. It wasn’t talked about then. I just knew that when the black hole started to suck me in that I would be miserable, panicked, and scared that maybe this time I wouldn’t be able to climb out of the hole. I eventually found the will and the ability to cope with it and some steps to control it without medicine and spent most of my life happy with just intermittent times of anxiety and panic. Then I found Bio-identical hormones (Yes, these are for men and women) and realized I suffered all those years needlessly. Why this cure isn’t shouted from the house tops I don’t know, but it probably has to do with the huge Pharmaceuticals in this country, that make a fortune from our ignorance. They are so much cheaper than the drugs that are out there now. I just can’t tell you what a difference my quality of life is now that I am taking them and the greatest part is they are all natural and there are NO SIDE EFFECTS. The interesting thing is that now that my body is REALLY chemically balanced my RLS has diminished. Go figure?
I would love for everyone to know about Bio- identicals. To find a Doctor that prescribes them just get on the internet and search for a compounding pharmacy in your state and call them, and then ask for a Doctor in your area that works with Bio-identical Hormones. If I have convinced anyone to try them I would love to hear from you, because I know they will change your life around. They have for me. (There is a whole other letter I need to write about how Bio-identicals have helped me to lose weight, but I’ll save it for another time.)

Restless Leg Syndrome, Parkinsons and Dopamine!

If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep, it might be your legs causing the troubles. University of Cincinnati Sleep Center experts say a syndrome that tends to run in families may be to blame and it often affects those who are pregnant or have diabetes.

If you toss and turn while lying in bed, you could have restless leg syndrome. “Restless leg syndrome is basically the sensation that you can’t get your legs comfortable and you have to keep moving your legs,” said Dr. James Knepler. “It usually happens when you are lying still and most frequently when you are entering bed trying to fall asleep.” The thought is that this may happen due to changes in the brain from something called dopamine. That is a similar problem in Parkinson’s disease, so researchers have now started using medications used in Parkinson’s to treat RLS. Parkinson’s is a disease that causes tremors and sporadic movement. Sleep medicine expert Dr. Knepler says that is sort of what’s happening in restless leg syndrome, which is why Parkinson’s medications such as Mirapex and Requip may work to reduce RLS symptoms. “It’s not that this is a precursor to Parkinson’s, (it’s) just that these medications work on the dopamine receptor in your brain, which for Parkinson’s works with the tremor and for this works with the restless legs.

A sleep study is the best way to find out if you have RLS. In addition to medications, symptoms can be reduced by getting proper treatment if you have low iron levels in your blood and by staying physically active throughout the day. Caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol tend to aggravate this condition. A sleep study is usually covered by medical insurance if it is recommended by your primary care doctor.
